ICAD Upstarts 2022 – Flower Tops Café (Brief by Pentagram NY)
In 2022, I took part in the ICAD Upstarts programme — a fun and fast-paced creative challenge where participants responded to weekly briefs set by leading design studios from Ireland and around the world. This particular brief was set by Pentagram Design Studio in New York, who have worked on a number of cannabis brands. Our task was to create a brand identity for a new cannabis company based in NYC.
After researching the diverse and evolving landscape of cannabis branding, I chose to focus on a group often overlooked — those who are completely new to cannabis and curious to try it in a safe, friendly environment.
My concept, Flower Tops Café, reimagines the cannabis experience as a relaxed, colourful, and welcoming café that serves cannabis coffee and curated products. It’s a space designed for comfort, creativity, and good vibes — the perfect place to get high (in more ways than one).

The graphic flower marks seen used through out the identity represent the diverse audience welcomed by the brand. From experienced cannabis users to newbies, all Flower Tops are welcome.
The use of both collage and the graphic marks together was inspired by surrealist imagery and about capturing that blissful, head in the clouds feeling. These collages and graphic forms could be used across both social media and packaging to create bold visual impact.
